The newborn to toddler period is a stage in life when children grow up very quickly and develop many early skills. To help them in this crucial stage of their life, we must stimulate them through various activities adapted to their capacities and needs. In this post, PlayLearn offers ideas for simple activities using sensory toys that you can set up at home to support the youngest in their discovery of the world and their first learning.

Assemble discovery baskets: From 6 months, discovery baskets can be used. However, be careful: you must put objects, games and toys that are safe for the young one’s ages. The senses are stimulated thanks to the multiple sensations of the objects to be grasped. This activity will allow children to discover a whole new world within their reach.

Try heuristic games: A heuristic game is an experimentation and discovery activity for children between 6 months and 2 years old to do. Thanks to their hands and their mouths, babies will discover textures, tastes, weight and more that will help them understand the world. Everything your baby touches is a toy for them. Exploration is encouraged by making treasure baskets available.

Explore shapes: Until the age of 2, the child's visual acuity allows him to discern only very contrasting shapes. The simple, geometric illustrations, in black and white, then with primary colors, therefore offer the best stimuli to his need for observation and discovery. This activity makes it possible to offer toddlers, panels of contrasting shapes, which will evolve, transform and invite them to observations mobilizing all their senses.

Use magical sensory tubes: Sensory tubes will delight young and old alike, and on PlayLearn you are able to choose different shapes, colors and designs. The young ones here can observe and explore materials and objects that are still too small for them, in complete safety.

Use a sensory wall: Sensory wall games provide a new opportunity for a rich and diversified sensory exploration on the vertical dimension of walls. They provide tactile, visual, auditory and vestibular input directly face to face with the user, in a more active position, thus resulting in different motor gestures. Sensory walls stimulate the senses and emotions thanks to the sound, tactile or visual perceptions they offer.
